My New Favorite Cleaning Products – Meet Murchison-Hume

I’m so excited to be sharing my Murchison-Hume review – I can safely say that these are now my favorite cleaning products!

Today I have the pleasure of telling you about my new obsession. It all started with a good old-fashioned shopping spree at the Container Store (which is cheaper than therapy…usually). I was perusing cleaning products to re-invigorate my new year/new me cleaning routine and judging cleaning products with my nose, as I do. I took a whiff of a new-to-me brand Murchison-Hume Original Fig cleaner and – boom. Sold. Instantly obsessed. It smelled like no other cleaning product.

While yes, I initially fell in love with the smell and how well the cleaners worked, it wasn’t until I went online to order more and did research on the philosophy/story behind the brand that I truly became a fan girl.

What makes Murchison-Hume different?

1. The scents (what hooked me). Since I cannot waft you a sample over the internet, you’re either going to have to take my word for it or go out and find some to smell for yourself – but using these products (especially anything in Original Fig) is like bathing your house in a luxury home scent. SO GOOD. It makes cleaning something that I actually look forward to. The scent is like a little reward, and it turns out positive reinforcement works on me – I can’t stop cleaning!
2. Better-for-you ingredients (what got me to fully switch over). All of Murchison-Hume’s products are natural, plant-based, and free of any sketchy chemicals. Read: non-toxic and eco-friendly. WIN. I actually didn’t know this until I started doing more research. Come for the smell, stay for the healthier swap!

A little background: The company was founded by Max Kater, a former fashion/beauty editor, who found that traditional cleaning products were making her baby’s allergies worse every time she used them. She knew there had to be other mothers out there having the same problems and worked with a natural lab in Australia to develop her own plant-based housecleaning and personal care products that were natural and effective (spoiler alert: she nailed it). And since they’re coming from a fashion/beauty editor, they have the added bonus of looking good and smelling amazing.

What Murchison-Hume products should you start with?

Out of all of the products I’ve tried so far, this is what I would recommend you start with.

1. All-Purpose Cleaner. If you’re going to try ONE thing – hands down, it’s the All-Purpose Cleaner in Original Fig. This was my gateway drug. It smells luxuriously fresh – almost like a salon shampoo or a clean perfume. Hard to describe, but once you know, you know. Buy the bottle once, then replenish using the refill concentrates.
2. Glass Cleaner. The label cheekily says “Who said glass cleaner has to be blue?” and weirdly enough, I’ve never stopped to question that until now. Not only does this glass cleaner not smell like something that can’t possibly be good for you (I won’t point any fingers), it does the job just as well – without the use of ammonia, artificial dyes, or harsh chemicals. I was shocked! (Sidenote: these glass cleaning cloths – the white with black honeycomb specifically – will change your life. Streak-free, reusable, just the best!)
3. Everything Laundry Soap. I love that this is a concentrated formula (one bottle lasts up to 94 loads) with clean ingredients. I would suggest adding this pump to your cart as it will make using the detergent 100x easier. A little goes a long way!
4. Heirloom Dish Soap. I noticed that my previous favorite dish soap was so overly scented that it sometimes made its way onto the food I was cooking – which was slightly alarming. This dish soap smells fantastic but isn’t scented to the point where your pan the next day is going to have your tortilla tasting like soap. It gets the job done wonderfully without the dyes and harsh chemicals, which is especially important for things that you are cooking and eating from.

Long story short: Murchison-Hume’s cleaning products get me excited to clean my house with something that smells like a home fragrance while giving me peace of mind on the ingredients front. Not to mention, the packaging makes it feel like a home accessory vs. something that I would rush to hide under a cabinet in between uses. It’s a win-win-win.
